The work made for this exhibition is based on drawings I developed while attending an 'Alpha' course; Christian based sessions examining the 'meaning of life'. I wanted to revisit the Christian faith to see how it could relate to my life in an adult context. Through examining my feelings and beliefs the developing ideas resulted in me wanting to visualise a journey to be taken. As my previous work had been based on sculptural work for the centre of mazes, I felt the theme of the journey through the maze, was a natural progression and in itself a metaphor for my feelings. |

The difficulty of a journey presents many factors: choice of route - whether it is easy or hard, getting lost, not knowing what is in front of you and the excitement and possible trepidation of aiming for a specific place. To relate these feelings I produced three maze designs, firstly the journey itself, secondly about the symbolism of the Cross, and why Jesus died on it and thirdly the Holy Spirit, looking at access to the Trinity. Although Christianity encompasses a family of people; individual parts within one body, I embraced the concept of a snowflake, because like it we are all different. Although when we look from far away we may seem the same, only when you look closely you can see the beauty and intricacy, which makes us distinct. In the context of the exhibition I have chosen to relate my ideas in the mediums of textiles, concrete, mosaics and resin. I feel it is important to resolve the design before it is made from different materials, so I have also presented my original ideas to show as a starting point to the theme. |
